AVIATION SECURITY
Our Changing World
As recent events show, the need for better security detection technology is clear. Acceptable defenses are now being deployed for baggage scanning, including differential X-ray and X-ray tomography. Unfortunately, these methods are not appropriate for passenger screening due to health concerns and personal privacy issues.
Fast, Accurate Molecular Screening of Passengers
The performance criteria on which aviation security screening technologies are judged are accuracy (high detection and low false positive rate,) speed and cost. As terrorists become more sophisticated, there will be a need to detect an increasing variety of threats (new explosives, chemical weapons, etc.). Systems must also be sufficiently automated for non-technical security personnel to operate.
In partnership with the Transportation Security Agency of the Department of Homeland Security and Sandia National Laboratories, Syagen has developed the most advanced detection technology (explosives-detecting mass spectrometer) available for high-throughput screening of passengers and personnel for explosives. Combining Syagen’s core detection system and Sandia’s passenger portal, the personnel screening system is planned for deployment at airports and other high security venues.
The detector is based on Syagen's QitTof™ mass analyzer and is coupled to a novel ionizer configuration that is specially tuned for ultrasensitive detection of explosives and chemical agents. |
