John D. Baldeschwieler, PhD (Director Emeritus)

John has been a Professor of Chemistry at Caltech since 1973. He served as the Chairman of Caltech's Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering for 5 years. Dr. Baldeschwieler is also a General Partner of the Athenaeum Fund, a venture capital firm and is a successful entrepreneur, academic and scientist. He pioneered the use of nuclear magnetic resonance, ion cyclotron resonance and other techniques that have provided insights into problems in chemistry and biology. In addition to his academic activities, he has founded and directed three successful pharmaceutical companies: Vestar Inc., NeXstar Pharmaceuticals and Combion, Inc. and serves as a Board Member for the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Medical Science, the Huntington Medical Research Institutes, and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Dr. Baldeschwieler has conducted research and taught at Harvard, Stanford, and Caltech. During his last two years at Stanford, he took a leave of absence to serve as the Deputy Director of the Office of Science and Technology in the White House. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and also serves on a large number of national scientific and advisory committees. He was named by President Clinton as one 12 recipients of the National Medal of Science for year 2000.

Malcolm E. Cloyd

Malcolm is the Managing General Partner and a founding member of the two Athenaeum Funds which provide seed capital to startup commercializing technologies developed in university and other research environments. Prior to co-founding The Athenaeum Funds, Malcolm managed manufacturing and service businesses in the petroleum and related industries. He was the general manager of the largest cash generating divisions at two major corporations, Geosource, Inc., and International Technology Corp. He was also the Manager of Mergers and Acquisitions for Geosource, Inc., a Fortune 500 company. He is also Chairman of the Board, CEO and President of Advanced TeleSensors, Inc., which he cofounded with a senior research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to commercialize a technology developed for a US Government security agency. He serves on the boards of several advanced technology companies and is actively involved in leading strategic planning at these organizations. In addition to Syagen Technology, Inc, his current board of director positions include: Language Weaver, Inc., a human communication solutions company; Eidogen-Sertanty, Inc., a pioneering informatics technology company; and InterMarine, Inc, a privately owned, petroleum industry services company with worldwide operations.

Michael J. Doyle

Mike was the founder and former Chairman, President and CEO of Unit Instruments, Inc. of Yorba Linda, CA, the leading supplier of gas flow control instrumentation to the semiconductor industry. From 1980 - 1995 he grew the company to $65M in sales with 400 employees achieving the #1 worldwide market position. He moved the company from an engineering focused operation to a customer/market driven focus with average annual sales increasing over 30% per year from 1984 to 1996. He holds several patents on gas and liquid flow controllers and has significant experience working with semiconductor manufacturers on process development. He has served on a number of company boards as well as professional and academic organizations, and participated in industry and university forums on Entrepreneurship, venture capital and a variety of related topics.

Michael S. Story

Mike was a cofounder of the Finnigan Corporation where he worked until his retirement in 2003. He was involved in the research, design, and commercialization of mass spectrometers for 37 years. Mr. Story holds numerous patents, several publications, book chapters, and numerous presentations in the field of mass spectrometry. Mike has also served on several influential government panels, particularly relating to aviation security and more recently under the general area of homeland security. He served almost continuously from 1988 to 2005 on five National Academy of Science, National Research Council (NRC) Committees and two panels on commercial aviation security. These committees and panels addressed all facets of the development, regulation, and assessment of technologies applicable to aviation security. He is a founding member of the American Society of Mass Spectrometry.

Jack A. Syage, PhD, CEO and President

Jack has 25 years of experience in creating and leading the development of innovative technologies in the analytical and aerospace industries. He has led Syagen since its inception and has forged several commercial partnerships with key industry leaders and has been awarded about 50 government contracts and grants. His honorary positions have included member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Physical Chemistry, invited participant at the Nobel Symposium in Chemistry, Visiting Professor at the University of California, Irvine, Visiting Professor at the Universit de Paris-Sud, Orsay France, Plenary Lecturer at the Okazaki Conference, and Chairman of a DOE Committee that established a National Environmental Facility. Jack has published over 120 papers and delivered over 50 invited talks in fields of mass spectrometry, trace detection, and ultrafast spectroscopy, and has over 20 U.S. patents issued or pending. He has appeared on the list of the Most Highly Cited Chemists of the last two decades. He received a BA in Chemistry from Hamilton College and a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Brown University and received several academic awards including the Best Thesis Prize. Jack was a postdoctoral fellow at Caltech under Nobel Laureate Ahmed Zewail.
